John's history in counselling, social, and disability services has seen him work with a broad range of clients, including those facing severe illnesses and disadvantage, and from diverse cultures and backgrounds. With a unique ability to communicate, solve problems, organise, and help people to feel at ease, he has been able to instil hope in people who felt ignored by their systems. This was born not only of his devotion to learning, but also from his own history of mental illness, a situation which required him to be self-sufficient, and leads him on his continuing journey to be the best he can be for himself and others.
John holds a Bachelor of Psychological Sciences. His counselling approach is evidence-based, combining person-centred, cognitive, behavioural, existential, and schema modalities with motivational interviewing and evolutionary theories. He carefully evaluates theory against his own and clients' experiences while considering feedback to adapt his approach to each person. He wants to be seen by his clients as a human being just like they are, with his own journey, virtues, flaws, and eccentricities.
